Penn State's AI Hub recently released AI guidelines for the University, including guidance specifically for researchers. This guidance lays out general principlesto consider when using AI for research.
Importantly, researchers must
- Verify the accuracy of AI-generated material/data
- Recognize AI's inherent susceptibility to bias
- Be transparent and disclose the use of AI
- Stay aware of applicable University policies, federal regulations, and journal requirements
- Only use tools designated as appropriate based on the sensitivity of the information being processed.
Human subjects researchers are also reminded that using participant data in AI could be a violation of their IRB protocol or consent documents.
The ORP participates in the University's AI working group; we can be reached at orp@psu.edu. General AI questions should be directed to aihub@psu.edu.
